#I’D LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THIS SCREENCAP #BECAUSE REMEMBER HOW WILLOW’S FIRST REACTION WAS TO GO TO TARA AND PROTECT TARA #AND ANYA’S FIRST INSTINCT WAS TO RUN TO GILES #IT DOESN’T MATTER THAT SHE THOUGHT HE WAS HER FIANCE #THAT WAS MUSCLE MEMORY #HER INSTINCT WAS TO GO TO GILES #HER I N S T I N C T #GANYA #I SHOUT FROM THE ROOFTOPS AS PEOPLE CALL THE COPS ABOUT THE CRAZY PERSON ON THE ROOF
See, I know that shippers of a ship have their figurative “shipper goggles” on.. and perhaps Anya did have SOME kind of affection for Giles.. but it was entirely one-sided. Giles never gave any indication that he had any sort of attraction toward Anya, aside from being faintly annoyed by how literal she tended to be. “Ganya” was nice for this one episode, but it wouldn’t have really worked for more than that.
Canonically speaking there’s really no way to disagree with this. Outside of this episode there were really only a few nice moments between them that can be viewed with shipper goggles - and even then it’s just a case of shippers gotta ship (and what fun it is! Hooray imaaaaaginaaation! /Spongebob voice)
But ooooh do I love me some well-written ganya AUs! Because I do think they had some affection for each other just not necessarily the romantic kind (though if it were, it’d be more likely to be on Anya’s end…she knows ruggedly handsome when she sees it, heh, and she does seem to love those Gilesy hugs), and I love how they bicker, and it’s fun to imagine that maybe, had the ending gone differently, there could have been something there that turned into something else.
But yeah, I mean…it’s not like it DID happen, and as far as I know there’s not even much commentary on their relationship so…it’s pretty much up to you to go with canon or throw on the shipper goggles and play ‘what if.” *shrug*
